50th Anniversary Edition Black Vinyl LP With 8-Page Booklet And 24 x 36 Poster

Capitol Records and UMe issued this black vinyl edition of Band Of Gypsys on March 27, 2020, to mark 50 years since the album's American release. The official Jimi Hendrix site describes it as an all-analog cut from the original analog stereo tapes, pressed at Quality Record Pressings, with Eddie Kramer overseeing the mastering. Acoustic Sounds' listing for this barcode adds that the cut uses parts mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound, and Elusive Disc calls it the first US vinyl release of the 2010 remaster.

The gatefold jacket holds an eight-page booklet with an essay by Hendrix archivist John McDermott, plus a 24 x 36 inch replica of the poster Capitol used to promote the album in 1970. The same anniversary campaign included a swirl-colored pressing sold only through the AuthenticHendrix.com store. This is the black pressing that went to general retail.

Wally Heider recorded the album at the Fillmore East in New York on January 1, 1970, and the jacket credits production to Heaven Research, Hendrix's own pseudonym. It was his first album without the Experience. Bassist Billy Cox was an old friend from Hendrix's years in R&B touring bands, and drummer Buddy Miles was known for the Electric Flag and the Buddy Miles Express. Miles had already played on "Rainy Day, Dream Away" for Electric Ladyland, and here he wrote and sang "Changes" and "We Gotta Live Together." Hendrix owed Capitol an album of original material under a 1968 legal settlement, and this live set paid that debt.

Band Of Gypsys came out in the US on March 25, 1970. It reached No. 5 during a 61-week run on the Billboard album chart and went gold within two months. It was the last full-length Hendrix album issued in his lifetime.
