2023 Legacy Reissue on Black Vinyl

This single black LP is Legacy's September 15, 2023 vinyl reissue of Blow by Blow, catalog number 19658804911, with both Epic and Legacy credited on the release. Nine instrumentals run five to Side A and four to Side B. The shrinkwrap carries a hype sticker that calls it Beck's first all-instrumental album and notes the two Stevie Wonder originals, the Beatles cover and George Martin's production.

Blow by Blow was recorded at AIR in London in October 1974 and issued by Epic in March 1975, the first album credited to Jeff Beck alone. After Beck, Bogert & Appice broke up, Beck brought back keyboardist Max Middleton from the second Jeff Beck Group. He hired George Martin to produce after hearing Martin's work on the Mahavishnu Orchestra's Apocalypse. Phil Chen (credited as Phil Chenn) plays bass and Richard Bailey plays drums and percussion.

Stevie Wonder gave Beck two songs, "Cause We've Ended as Lovers" and "Thelonius," and played uncredited clavinet on the second. Beck dedicated the first to guitarist Roy Buchanan. The album also includes the Beatles' "She's a Woman" and "Diamond Dust," written by Bernie Holland. Martin arranged strings for the last track on each side, "Scatterbrain" and "Diamond Dust."

The album reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the RIAA, and it remains Beck's highest-charting album. John Collier painted the cover and John Berg designed the jacket.
