Black Vinyl LP, Remixed & Remastered

This Craft Recordings LP returns James Booker's Classified to vinyl as a single disc in its original 12-track running order, using the 2013 remixed and remastered audio rather than the expanded program. The back cover credits the new mixes to David Farrell in June 2013 and mastering to Paul Blakemore at CMG Mastering in Cleveland, Ohio. Jeff Powell cut the lacquers at Take Out Vinyl, and the record was pressed at Memphis Record Pressing. It ships in a single-pocket jacket with the original cover design, a Rounder Records center label and catalog number CR00281.

The reissue belongs to the program of catalog releases marking Rounder Records' 50th anniversary. Booker cut the album at Ultrasonic Studios in New Orleans on October 18-20, 1982, with Scott Billington and John Parsons producing, and Proper Music relays Billington's account that it was finished in four hours. Proper Music also describes Classified as Booker's last commercial recording. He died on November 8, 1983, at the age of 43.

Booker plays piano and sings on every track. Alvin "Red" Tyler on tenor saxophone, James Singleton on bass and John Vidacovich on drums join him on "One for the Highway," "Baby Face," "Lawdy Miss Clawdy," "Angel Eyes" and "If You're Lonely," with Tyler sitting out "Angel Eyes." The program runs from Fats Domino's "One for the Highway," Roger Miller's "King of the Road" and Leiber and Stoller's "Hound Dog" to Booker's own "Classified" and "Three Keys." The Professor Longhair medley stops abruptly because Booker left mid-song to go and cash a check.

The back cover reproduces Bunny Matthews' liner notes, dated January 1983 and built from conversations with Booker, including his account of the 1960 instrumental "Gonzo," which climbed to No. 43 on the Billboard pop chart. AllMusic has called Classified "one of the great blues albums of the early '80s."
