This Warner Classics LP reissues Itzhak Perlman's recording of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra, coupled with the Serenade Melancolique, Op. 26. It is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl from the remastered recording and keeps the original cover artwork. Total running time is about 47 minutes.
The sessions took place at the "Old Met" in Philadelphia on November 11 and 13, 1978. Suvi Raj Grubb produced them for EMI and Michael Gray was the balance engineer. The album was first released in 1979.
The concerto has stayed with Perlman throughout his career. In the label's notes he says Tchaikovsky "wears his heart on his sleeve," and he describes the work as one of "unabashed Romanticism." The first movement fills Side A; the Canzonetta, the finale and the Serenade follow on Side B.
