140g Virgin Vinyl LP With Download Code

This is the US vinyl edition of Open to Chance, issued by Paradise of Bachelors on September 30, 2016 under catalog number PoB-30. The label pressed it on 140g virgin vinyl and housed it in a heavy-duty 24-point matte jacket, with color labels and a download code inside. A CD edition in a gatefold jacket came out on the same day under its own barcode.

Itasca is the recording name of Los Angeles guitarist, singer and songwriter Kayla Cohen. Open to Chance was her debut for Paradise of Bachelors and, by the label's account, her first album made with a full band, following several earlier releases that include the 2014 LP Unmoored by the Wind. The label notes that her songwriting grew out of a long practice in noise and drone music, and that Cohen cites Robert Creeley's 1959 poem "Kore" as an influence on this record. The project's name is itself borrowed: a 19th-century pseudo-Ojibwe place name assembled from the Latin veritas and caput.

The back jacket credits every song to Cohen, who sings and plays guitar and piano. Dave McPeters adds pedal steel and bass, Kacey Johansing plays drums and Whitney Johnson violin, with flute from Elizabeth Harper on "Daylight Under My Wing" and recorder from Heather M.C. on "Bonafide." Jason Soda and Cohen recorded the album in Los Angeles in 2015; Brian Sulpizio mixed it in Chicago and Josh Bonati mastered it. "Carousel," the last song on side A, is a solo piano piece.

Ella Andersson's jacket photographs were taken at the Santa Anita racetrack in Pasadena, which the label describes as a crucible of bad luck for gamblers. Pitchfork rated the album 7.8 on its release.
