Black Vinyl 12-Inch EP

This is the black vinyl edition of Joy, the five-track EP Isaiah Collier made for Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings, pressed on a single 12-inch disc under catalog number BWOOD455LP. Three tracks sit on side A and two on side B, and the yellow center label prints the side A running order. The EP runs about 27 minutes, and Brownswood issued it in the UK on July 31, 2026.

Collier is a Chicago saxophonist, composer, multi-instrumentalist and bandleader. DownBeat put him on its cover as "The Next Sax Giant," and he was named a 2025 Steve Jobs Archive Fellow. Before Joy he released The World Is On Fire and The Almighty on Division 81 in 2024, and The New York Times placed The Almighty among its ten best jazz albums of that year.

The title track, which was also the lead single, began about three years before the record came out, at a time when many people close to Collier were losing family and friends. He sings and plays piano and tenor saxophone on it, backed by an 11-piece ensemble with full horn and string sections. On "Landscape of Dreams" a traffic delay held up the band, so Collier recorded every part himself: layered flutes, drums, Wurlitzer and auxiliary percussion.

"Where I'm Loved" puts his falsetto over Wurlitzer and guitar. "When the Dust Settles" has Collier on synth bass, played on a microKORG he had just been given by co-producer Sonny Daze. Cole Runge plays guitar and Collier's brother Jeremiah Collier plays drums, and Daze handled post-production. The closing "God's By Your Side" was written after the death of D'Angelo, whose records were part of Collier's childhood in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and it draws on gospel and on D'Angelo's vocal and instrumental arrangements.
