Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP in a Tip-On Jacket

This is the Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf edition of Black Rhythm Revolution!, issued by Craft Recordings in July 2023 on 180-gram black vinyl. Kevin Gray cut it from the original analog tapes at Cohearent Audio, RTI pressed it, and it comes in a tip-on jacket that reproduces the original Prestige front, catalog number PR 10005 included. Craft calls it the album's first wide reissue since 1971. An earlier 2020 pressing was a Vinyl Me, Please club edition on blue swirl vinyl, limited to 1,000 copies.

Top Shelf is the Jazz Dispensary line in which Craft brings rarities out of its vaults with all-analog mastering. One track here was already familiar to the imprint's listeners: "Wander," which opens side B, had appeared on the Jazz Dispensary compilation Soul Diesel Vol. 2.

The record was Idris Muhammad's first album as a leader. The New Orleans drummer cut it on November 2, 1970, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, and Prestige released it the following year. The front cover names the band: Virgil Jones on trumpet, Clarence Thomas on tenor and soprano saxophones, Melvin Sparks on guitar, Harold Mabern on electric piano, Jimmy Lewis on electric bass and Buddy Caldwell on congas. Ace Records' notes credit Thomas with arranging the material. Over his career Muhammad also recorded with Ahmad Jamal, Lou Donaldson, Pharoah Sanders, Bob James and Tete Montoliu.

The two sides split cleanly. Side A takes three outside tunes: "Express Yourself," Charles Wright's hit with the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band; "Soulful Drums," first heard on Jack McDuff's Screamin'; and James Brown's "Super Bad." Side B is given to Muhammad's own two long pieces, and Ace notes that "By the Red Sea" carries a solo on New Guinea log drum. Reviewing this reissue, DownBeat pointed to the funkier side of jazz-fusion that the album documents.
