Blue Note 75th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue Series, Remastered LP

This is the 2014 US vinyl reissue of Speak Like a Child, catalog number B0020644-01, issued by Blue Note with Universal Music Enterprises as part of the label's 75th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue Series. Blue Note announced the series in February 2014 as a long-running program of remastered albums sold at a low price, pressed to a high standard and packaged as faithful reproductions of the label's original jackets. Label president Don Was said at the launch that the remastering work had begun two years earlier, in high-resolution transfers at 96k and 192k.

The single LP comes in a gatefold jacket that keeps the original BST 84279 catalog number on its front, and the audio is marked (P) 2013 with mastering credited to Bernie Grundman. It carries the six tracks of the 1968 album in their original side order. The three alternate takes added to later CD editions are not part of this pressing.

Hancock recorded the album at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on March 6 and 9, 1968, with Duke Pearson producing. It was his sixth album as a leader and his Blue Note follow-up to Maiden Voyage. His trio with Ron Carter on bass and Mickey Roker on drums is joined by an unusual front line of Thad Jones on flugelhorn, Peter Phillips on bass trombone and Jerry Dodgion on alto flute, voiced through Jones's uncredited arrangements, and none of the three wind players takes a solo.

Riot and The Sorcerer, which open and close the record, were Hancock compositions already in the Miles Davis Quintet's repertoire. First Trip is the one tune not by Hancock; Ron Carter wrote it for his son. David Bythewood's cover photograph shows Hancock in silhouette with his future wife, Gigi Meixner, and Blue Note's Francis Wolff drew the album's title from it. Nat Hentoff's liner notes call the record "an impressive further stage in the evolution of Herbie Hancock as writer and player."
