Lunar Marble 180 Gram Vinyl, Vinyl Me, Please Essentials 50th Anniversary Edition

This is the Vinyl Me, Please pressing of Sextant, made for the album's 50th anniversary and chosen as the club's Essentials Record of the Month for December 2023. It is a single 180-gram LP in a grey-and-white swirl the club calls "Lunar Marble," played at 33 1/3 RPM. Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound cut the lacquers from the analog tapes, keeping the chain all-analog (AAA), and GZ Media pressed the discs. Sony Music Entertainment manufactured the run for Vinyl Me, Please under Columbia catalog number 19658819721.

The foil-stamped jacket arrives with a VMP obi strip, a Listening Notes booklet written by Marcus J. Moore, and a 12-by-12-inch black-and-white photo print by Tomi Copi from the Michael Ochs Archives. The front cover reproduces the original 1973 painting, signed R. Springett.

Columbia first issued Sextant on March 30, 1973, as KC 32212. It was Hancock's first album for the label after two for Warner Bros., and the last studio record by his Mwandishi sextet: Bennie Maupin on reeds, Eddie Henderson on trumpet and flugelhorn, Julian Priester on trombones, Buster Williams on bass and Billy Hart on drums, joined by Patrick Gleeson on ARP synthesizers and Buck Clarke on percussion. David Rubinson produced the sessions at Wally Heider Studios and Different Fur in San Francisco.

Apple Music's editorial notes describe the album as Hancock's first documented work on Moog and ARP synthesizers. Hancock's own site records that the original tape boxes named "Rain Dance" as "Loop Tune" and "Hidden Shadows" as "Million Seller," and lists peaks of No. 3 on Billboard's jazz chart and No. 176 on the pop chart. Within the year Hancock had formed the Headhunters, keeping only Maupin from this lineup.
