Blue With Black Swirl Vinyl, Limited To 500 Copies, Remastered

Real Gone Music pressed this blue with black swirl edition of The Skipper At Home in a run of 500 copies. The disc is translucent blue streaked with black and carries an orange Black Jazz Records label bearing the Real Gone logo and catalog number RGM-1264. Real Gone's own store credits the remastering to Mike Milchner and the liner notes to Pat Thomas.

The album is the second of two records Henry "The Skipper" Franklin made as a leader for Black Jazz, first issued in 1974 as BJQD/17. Gene Russell and Dick Schory founded the label in 1969, and it released twenty albums between 1971 and 1975. Real Gone first returned this title to print in 2021 as part of its ongoing Black Jazz series.

Franklin brought back several players from his debut, The Skipper: trumpeter and flugelhornist Oscar Brashear, tenor and soprano saxophonist Charles Owens, and pianist Bill Henderson, credited here as Kemang Sunduza. Keyboardist Kirk Lightsey, trombonist Al Hall, Jr. and drummer Leon "Ndugu" Chancler join them. PopMatters counts twelve musicians alongside the bandleader, four vocalists and two pianists among them. Hall wrote "Soft Spirit" and "The Magic Boy," while "Venus Fly Trap" and "Waltz for Boobuss" are David Durrah compositions. "Soft Spirit" was later sampled by A Tribe Called Quest.

Born in Los Angeles in 1940, Franklin played bass on Hugh Masekela's 1968 number one single "Grazing in the Grass" and with Masekela's band at the Monterey International Pop Festival the year before. His credits since run from Freddie Hubbard, Hampton Hawes and Count Basie to a gold record with Stevie Wonder on Journey Through The Secret Life of Plants.
