Limited 25th Anniversary Edition Smoke Vinyl LP

This limited colored LP marks the 25th anniversary of Risin' Outlaw, the first solo album by Hank Williams III. The label's own product image shows a clear disc swirled with black smoke; Discogs describes it as clear with black smoke, and UK retailers list the same pressing as smokey gray. Curb Records issued it in the US under catalog number D1-77949, with a street date of November 1, 2024. The thirteen songs run seven to Side A and six to Side B.

Curb first released the album on September 7, 1999, with Chuck Howard and Bob Campbell-Smith producing. It peaked at No. 52 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart. "You're the Reason" was the lead single in 2000, and "I Don't Know" followed in 2001, reaching No. 50 on the country singles chart, with "If the Shoe Fits" after it.

The songwriting leans on Nashville and Texas honky-tonk writers. Wayne Hancock wrote "87 Southbound," "Thunderstorms & Neon Signs" and "Why Don't You Leave Me Alone," Buddy and Julie Miller wrote "Lonesome for You," and Randy Howard wrote the opener, "I Don't Know." Williams wrote "On My Own" and "Blue Devil" himself. The pressing's credits note that "Why Don't You Leave Me Alone" was recorded live on the road, and "Blue Devil" at home on a 4-track. Dale Crover and Greg Morrow play drums, with steel guitar from Paul Franklin, Dan Dugmore and Kayton Roberts, and fiddle from Rob Hajacos and Vernon Derrick.

Williams, the grandson of Hank Williams and son of Hank Williams Jr., later disowned the record. He told Country Standard Time he could stand to hear only about two of its songs, and he has called Lovesick, Broke and Driftin' his real debut.
