1971 Remix on CD

This single CD carries the 1971 remix of Anthem of the Sun, the Grateful Dead's second album. It was issued on its own on August 28, 2020, under Warner Records catalog number R2 1749 with Rhino, and the disc is HDCD-encoded. The sleeve reproduces the purple-field cover with the W7 logo and the original 1749 catalog number in the corner.

The band's own notes on dead.net say the remix was made so the record would reach the newer fans who arrived with Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, and that it has been "the most commonly heard version for the past 45+ years." The track titles carry a 2018 remaster designation. That was the year Rhino's 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition put the 1968 and 1971 mixes on one disc.

Warner Bros.-Seven Arts first released the album on July 18, 1968. It was the first Grateful Dead record with second drummer Mickey Hart. Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and soundman Dan Healy built it by splicing studio takes into concert tapes from late 1967 and early 1968, recorded at San Francisco's Carousel Ballroom, Seattle's Eagles Auditorium and Portland's Crystal Ballroom, among other venues. Tom Constanten was on leave from the US Air Force at the time and added prepared piano and tape effects that drew on John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Robert Hunter wrote words for "Alligator," a Lesh and Pigpen composition. Rolling Stone ranked the album number 288 on its list of the 500 greatest albums in both 2003 and 2012.
