Blue Note Tone Poet Series 180g LP in Deluxe Gatefold Jacket

This is the Blue Note Tone Poet Series edition of Nigeria, issued February 28, 2020: a single 180g LP cut all-analog from the original master tape and housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket. Kevin Gray mastered it at Cohearent Audio, Record Technology Incorporated (RTI) pressed it, and Joe Harley produced it for the series. Blue Note's store traces Tone Poet to label president Don Was's admiration for the audiophile Blue Note reissues issued by Music Matters, which led him to bring Harley, known as the "Tone Poet," over from that label. Blue Note launched the series in 2019 to mark its 80th anniversary.

Green cut these five tracks at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on January 13, 1962, with Sonny Clark on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Art Blakey on drums, and Alfred Lion producing. Blue Note's notes call the date one of Blakey's only appearances with Green. The record stayed unissued until 1980, when it appeared as Blue Note LT-1032. Mosaic Records' notes say Green's sessions with Clark spent nearly twenty years in the vaults because they did not fit the soulful image Blue Note had in mind for him. This was a busy stretch for Green: uDiscover Music counts 50 Blue Note sessions he played between 1961 and 1964, as leader or sideman.

Side A opens with Sonny Rollins's "Airegin," whose title is Nigeria spelled backwards, followed by a ten-minute reading of George and Ira Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So." Side B holds three standards: Cole Porter's "I Concentrate On You," Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne's "The Things We Did Last Summer" and Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II's "The Song Is You." In his AllMusic review Michael Erlewine gave the album 4.5 stars. The same session reappeared in 1997 on The Complete Quartets with Sonny Clark, together with "Nancy (With the Laughing Face)" and an alternate take of "Airegin."
