Verve Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram LP, Limited Import Edition

This limited import edition of His Majesty King Funk belongs to the Verve / Acoustic Sounds Series, the label's all-analog reissue line drawn from the Verve and Impulse! catalogs. The record is cut from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings (QRP) in Kansas.

The jacket is a tip-on gatefold reproducing the 1965 front cover, down to the V6-8627 catalog number and the STEREO legend across the top. Universal's European store credits Stoughton Printing with the jacket and lists a padded inner sleeve for the disc.

Green cut the album at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs on May 26, 1965, with Creed Taylor producing. It is the only album he made for Verve, one break in a Blue Note tenure that ran more than two decades. Larry Young plays Hammond B-3 organ, Harold Vick tenor saxophone and flute, Ben Dixon drums, and Candido Camero congas and bongos. AllMusic's Michael Erlewine notes it was the last of the five albums Green recorded with Young.

The opener, "The Selma March," is a Green original and a topical piece tied to the civil rights movement of 1965. The rest of the program comes from the band and the songbook: Ben Dixon wrote "The Cantaloupe Woman," Robert Graham wrote "Daddy Grapes," and the two standards are Ann Ronell's "Willow Weep for Me" and "That Lucky Old Sun," by Haven Gillespie and Beasley Smith.
