Indie Exclusive Yellow Vinyl

Gemini's indie exclusive pressing of the March 1973 WLIR broadcast, cut to yellow vinyl in a limited run, catalog number GEMLP1003. Ten performances across two sides, in a sleeve designed by Phil Johnson.

Sonic Sunset was recorded at Ultra Sonic Recording Studios in Hempstead, New York on March 13, 1973, during a live radio broadcast for WLIR-FM, a station then based in Garden City on Long Island. Parsons made it between his two solo studio albums, GP and Grievous Angel.

Emmylou Harris, then still unknown, sings the duet and harmony parts throughout, as she did on both studio records. The band behind them was not the band from those records: James Burton, Ronnie Tutt and most of the GP players were committed to Elvis Presley's TCB Band when Parsons and Harris set out to tour the United States, so Parsons assembled what he called the Fallen Angels - Neil Flanz on pedal steel, Jock Bartley on electric guitar, Kyle Tullis on bass, and N.D. Smart II on drums, who also takes harmony vocals on "The New Soft Shoe" and "Streets of Baltimore".

The set moves between Parsons' own writing - "Big Mouth Blues", "The New Soft Shoe", and "Drug Store Truck Driving Man", written with Roger McGuinn - and country standards including "Streets of Baltimore" and the Boudleaux Bryant song "Love Hurts", before closing on a rock and roll medley of "Bony Moronie", "Forty Days" and "Almost Grown". Parsons died later that year, at twenty-six.
