Record Store Day 2022 Single-Sided 12-Inch EP With Etched Side B

This Record Store Day 2022 release put On Golden Smog on vinyl for the first time, thirty years after the five-song covers EP first appeared on CD. It is cut as a single-sided 12-inch: all five songs sit on Side A, and Side B carries an etching of the band's logo. The hype sticker on the shrink states a limited edition of 5,500. Rhino manufactured and marketed the pressing, with Rykodisc credited as the label and catalog number R1 10348 on the runout.

Golden Smog came together in the Minneapolis-St. Paul clubs in 1989 as a loose country-rock outfit that played almost nothing but covers. The lineup on this record drew on Soul Asylum (Dan Murphy and Dave Pirner), The Jayhawks (Gary Louris and Marc Perlman), Run Westy Run (Kraig Johnson) and The Replacements (drummer Chris Mars), every one of them credited under a pseudonym because of contracts with other record companies. Mars also drew the cover art. The band name borrows a nickname given to Fred Flintstone, itself a play on Mel Tormé's "Velvet Fog."

The covers reach in unexpected directions: Bad Company's "Shooting Star," sung by Pirner and later used in the 1994 film Clerks; "Easy to Be Hard" from Hair, later covered by Three Dog Night, with Louris singing; the Rolling Stones' "Backstreet Girl"; Michaelangelo's "Son (We've Kept the Room Just the Way You Left It)"; and Thin Lizzy's "Cowboy Song," with Soul Asylum road manager Bill Sullivan on lead vocal. Recorded at Pachyderm in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, with Paul Pacific producing, the EP first came out on Crackpot Records in 1992 and returned on CD through Rykodisc in 1996.
