Verve Vault Series All-Analog 180-Gram Vinyl LP in Gatefold Jacket

This Verve Vault Series pressing of The Individualism of Gil Evans is analog from tape to lacquer: Ryan K. Smith cut it from the original master tapes at Sterling Sound, and Optimal in Germany pressed it on 180-gram vinyl. Smith's RKS initials are etched into the runout on both sides, next to a stamped Sterling credit. The gatefold jacket keeps the original Verve design, with the V6-8555 catalog number and STEREO banner on the front and a portrait of Evans on the back.

Verve first issued the album in September 1964, with Creed Taylor producing. Evans leads a big band from the piano and arranges and conducts throughout. The music comes from dates at A&R Studios in New York in September 1963, at Webster Hall in April 1964, and at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on July 9, 1964, which produced "The Barbara Song."

The players include Eric Dolphy on woodwinds, Wayne Shorter and Phil Woods on saxophones, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Paul Chambers and Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, with Johnny Coles and Steve Lacy among the regulars. The program sets two Evans originals, "Las Vegas Tango" and "El Toreador," beside "Flute Song/Hotel Me," written with Miles Davis, and Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's "The Barbara Song."

The album earned Evans a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance - Large Group or Soloist With Large Group. Reviewing it for AllMusic, Scott Yanow gave it four stars out of five and called it "highly recommended to Gil Evans fans." This LP keeps the original four-title program; the 1988 CD added five more pieces from the 1963 and 1964 sessions.
