Catalyst Records reissues Ju Ju Man on 180-gram sky blue vinyl as an independent-retail exclusive, with a street date of December 18, 2026.
Gary Bartz recorded the album for the West Coast Catalyst label in 1976. By then, as Catalyst's notes recount, he had played in Miles Davis's band and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and led the NTU Troop. Here he plays alto and soprano saxophone, clarinet and synthesizer and sings, with Charles Mims Jr. on piano, Curtis Robertson on electric and acoustic bass and Howard King on drums. Syreeta sings on "My Funny Valentine." Pat Britt produced the session at Sage & Sound, Jim Mooney engineered, and the lacquers were cut at Masterdisk.
Two Bartz originals, "Ju Ju Man" and "Pisces Daddy Blue," sit beside John Coltrane's "Straight Street," Rodgers and Hart's "My Funny Valentine" and Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge." Catalyst's notes for the reissue call it one of his finest sessions as a leader, and a collector's obscurity for decades.
Evergreen Vinyl ships records with care and attention to detail, using established carriers and packaging practices designed to protect physical media in transit.
