Translucent Red Vinyl

This is Omnivore Recordings' 2015 vinyl reissue of Real Nighttime, pressed as a limited run on translucent red vinyl for the album's 30th anniversary. The LP keeps the original twelve-song running order across two sides. A download card carries the thirteen bonus tracks from the expanded reissue, ten of them previously unissued: the session outtake "Faithless," a studio cover of Queen's "Lily of the Valley," and a run of live recordings from the Real Nighttime tour, Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" among them.

The package adds rare photographs, an interview with Mitch Easter and reissue co-producer Pat Thomas, notes from Byron Coley, and a remembrance from Carl Newman of The New Pornographers. Gavin Lurssen and Reuben Cohen handled the mastering, and Kevin Gray cut the lacquers. The video above is Omnivore's trailer for the reissue.

Game Theory's second full-length album first came out in 1985 on Enigma. It was the band's first record with Mitch Easter as producer, a partnership that carried through the rest of their 1980s catalog. Sessions ran from July 22 to 31, 1984, and the album was mixed that August at the Drive-In Studio in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Scott Miller wrote the songs and sang and played guitar, with Nancy Becker on keyboards, Fred Juhos on bass and Dave Gill on drums. Michael Quercio of The Three O'Clock sang backing vocals, and Jozef Becker, who joined the band years later, added percussion. Side B includes a cover of Alex Chilton's "You Can't Have Me." Miller's back-cover notes were written in the style of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, and in January 1990 Spin named the album among its "80 Excellent Records of the 80s."
