50th Anniversary Edition 180g Blue Vinyl LP in Gatefold Sleeve

Westbound Records marked fifty years of Funkadelic's second album with this UK edition, catalog number HIQLP 077, first issued in December 2020. It is a single 180-gram LP on blue vinyl, housed in a heavy card gatefold sleeve. The back cover credits the 1970 original as Westbound WB 2001 and notes that the recording is licensed to Ace Records, the London company that markets and distributes this Westbound edition. The record itself was manufactured in the EU.

Free Your Mind... and Your Ass Will Follow was recorded in Detroit across United Sound Studios, Audio Graphic Services and G-M Recording Studios, with George Clinton producing. Clinton has described the sessions as an attempt to cut a whole album "while we're all tripping on acid." The feedback-heavy title track runs to roughly a third of the album's length and shares side one only with "Friday Night, August 14th."

The lineup was early Funkadelic: Eddie Hazel and Tawl Ross on guitar, Bernie Worrell on organ and piano, Billy Nelson on bass and Tiki Fulwood on drums, with Clinton, Ray Davis, Fuzzy Haskins, Calvin Simon and Grady Thomas on vocals. Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent of Dawn sing on "Friday Night, August 14th." On release the album reached No. 11 on Billboard's Black Albums chart and No. 92 on the pop chart, and no Funkadelic album charted higher until One Nation Under a Groove in 1978. The single "I Wanna Know If It's Good to You" peaked at No. 82.

Joel Brodsky took the cover photograph, and the gatefold works as a visual pun on the title: the woman reaching skyward on the front is revealed to be nude once the sleeve is opened. En Vogue later took the name of their 1992 hit "Free Your Mind" from the album and its title song.
