40th Anniversary Edition on 180-Gram Black Vinyl

Zappa Records and UMe issued this edition in 2019, forty years after Orchestral Favorites first appeared. Bernie Grundman mastered the original album for vinyl, and it comes on 180-gram black vinyl in a gatefold jacket with an insert and newly created anniversary cover art.

The record had a rough start. Zappa delivered the tapes to Warner Bros. in 1977 to complete his contract for the DiscReet label, and Warner released the album in May 1979 without his approval, with no musician credits and sleeve art he had not signed off on. It still reached No. 168 on the Billboard 200. The 1991 CD on Barking Pumpkin was the first edition Zappa authorized, and the Zappa Family Trust describes this anniversary release as righting that wrong.

The music was recorded at UCLA's Royce Hall in September 1975. Zappa paid for the project himself and hired a roughly 37-piece group, the Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Zearott and drawn largely from musicians he had worked with before, among them Ian Underwood, Bruce Fowler, Dave Parlato, Malcolm McNab and Terry Bozzio. After several days of rehearsal and two evening concerts, the album was taken from an afternoon session with no audience and edited together by Zappa with a razor blade.

Strictly Genteel comes from the finale of 200 Motels. Pedro's Dowry was new; by the label's account Zappa wrote it instead of taking a vacation and called it "the best vacation I ever went on." Bogus Pomp makes its first appearance here, and Duke of Prunes is a new arrangement of a song from 1967's Absolutely Free.
