Record Store Day 2018 Burgundy Vinyl, 45 RPM Mono

This is the first vinyl issue of Lumpy Gravy as Frank Zappa first cut it: an orchestral-only edit of sessions recorded at Capitol Studios in 1967, which the front of the sleeve calls "a curiously inconsistent piece which started out to be a ballet but probably didn't make it." Zappa Records released it for Record Store Day on April 21, 2018, on 180-gram translucent burgundy vinyl cut at 45 RPM in mono.

Chris Bellman mastered it in 2017 at Bernie Grundman Mastering, working directly from the original quarter-inch mono analog tape master. The gatefold jacket restores Zappa's original album design.

Nick Venet, an A&R man at Capitol, commissioned the album after the Mothers of Invention's debut, Freak Out! Zappa's contract with Verve and MGM kept him from playing on another label's records, so he wrote the music and conducted a hired orchestra of Los Angeles session players he named the Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orchestra. Guitarist Tommy Tedesco, percussionist Emil Richards and drummer Shelly Manne were among them.

MGM threatened to sue, and Zappa recut the material into the Lumpy Gravy that Verve released in 1968, splicing in spoken-word passages, surf music and musique concrète. Capitol had issued the orchestral edit briefly on cartridge in 1967 before withdrawing it, and it did not appear officially again until the posthumous collection Lumpy Money.
