Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series 180g LP

This pressing is part of Blue Note's Classic Vinyl Reissue Series, which the label introduced as a continuation of the Blue Note 80 Vinyl Reissue Series it launched for its 80th anniversary in 2019. The production is all-analog: Kevin Gray mastered it at Cohearent Audio from the original master tapes, and Optimal in Germany pressed it on 180-gram vinyl, housed in standard packaging. Blue Note runs the series alongside its Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series, produced by Joe Harley, and gave the series' first sixteen titles to the enduring classics of its catalog. This edition was issued on September 24, 2021.

The labels carry the original stereo catalog number, BST 84163, and the jacket front shows 84163, while the modern number 3587502 runs on the spine and the label rim. Side A holds the three shorter pieces; Side B is given over to two long pieces with Dolphy on alto saxophone.

Eric Dolphy recorded the session on February 25, 1964, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Alfred Lion producing. It was his only recording as a leader for Blue Note, and it was issued after his death in West Berlin on June 29, 1964. His quintet had Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone, Richard Davis on bass and an eighteen-year-old Tony Williams on drums, credited on the jacket as Anthony Williams. All five compositions are Dolphy's. He plays bass clarinet on "Hat And Beard," a title that refers to Thelonious Monk, and on "Something Sweet, Something Tender"; flute on "Gazzelloni," named for the classical flutist Severino Gazzelloni, with whom he had studied; and alto saxophone on the second side.

Reid Miles designed the cover around a photograph of a "Will Be Back" sign in a shop window, its clock fitted with seven hands. The Penguin Guide to Jazz placed the album in its Core Collection with a perfect score and its crown.
