180 Gram Black Vinyl 2LP

Polydor's heavyweight reissue spreads Elbow's debut album across two 180-gram black LPs, three songs to a side, under catalog number 0894031. It carries the full twelve-track program with both "Asleep in the Back" and "Can't Stop," two songs that some of the original 2001 configurations left off. The reissue was due in September 2020, and the band held it back over a problem with the finish on the sleeves, saying they were "not prepared to accept a sub-standard product." It reached UK shops that December in a heavy matte gatefold jacket with the lyrics printed across the centerfold, each disc in a printed inner sleeve. The runouts carry Abbey Road etchings on all four sides.

V2 released Asleep in the Back in the UK on May 7, 2001, and in the US the following January. It was not the first album Elbow recorded: the band had shelved an earlier album's worth of material after Island Records dropped them. Ben Hillier and Steve Osborne were among its producers, and the record was shortlisted for the 2001 Mercury Prize.

Four singles came from it: "Red," "Powder Blue," "Newborn," and a double A-side of "Asleep in the Back" and "Coming Second," which became the band's first Top 20 hit. The album closes on "Scattered Black and Whites," a song Elbow revisited during their elbowrooms sessions in 2020.
