Yellow Gold 140g Double Vinyl in a Gatefold Jacket With Printed Inner Sleeves

This is the first vinyl edition of Meet the Eels: Essential Eels Vol. 1 1996-2006. Until this pressing the collection had been available only on CD and through streaming services, according to the band's own announcement. [PIAS] Recordings issues it under catalog number PIASC1132DLP as two 140-gram LPs in yellow gold vinyl, with the 24 tracks laid out six to a side. The discs are housed in a gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves.

The compilation first came out in January 2008 on DreamWorks, Geffen and UMe, assembled to mark ten years of the band led by Mark Oliver Everett, known as E. It arrived alongside the rarities set Useless Trinkets, and a second volume, Eels So Good: Essential Eels Vol. 2 (2007-2020), followed in 2023. Production credits across the set belong to E, Jim Jacobson, John Parish, Mickey Petralia and Michael Simpson.

Side A opens with "Novocaine for the Soul," the lead single from the 1996 debut Beautiful Freak. It charted in the US, Canada, the UK and the Netherlands, and its video was directed by Mark Romanek. The band went on to win Best International Breakthrough Act at the 1998 BRIT Awards. Four songs here come from Beautiful Freak and two from Electro-Shock Blues, joined by an unissued Jon Brion remix of "Climbing to the Moon" and a previously unreleased "Get Ur Freak On." Side C closes on "Dirty Girl" from the Live at Town Hall recordings, and side D begins with "I Need Some Sleep" from the Shrek 2 soundtrack.
