Rhino Reserve 180g Black Vinyl LP

This pressing is one of the two records that launched Rhino Reserve, Rhino's all-analog vinyl series, issued on January 31, 2025 alongside Allen Toussaint's Southern Nights as part of the label's Start Your Ear Off Right campaign. Chris Bellman cut the lacquers from the original analog masters at Bernie Grundman Mastering, and the disc is 180-gram black vinyl. Rhino describes the series as focused on keeping the original packaging intact, so each title comes in a heavyweight board jacket with Rhino Reserve-branded labels and a Fidelity-branded poly sleeve. Rhino's Patrick Milligan has framed the line as a more accessible companion to the label's High Fidelity series. The catalog number, RES1 3058, keeps the 3058 of the original Warner Bros. LP, BS 3058.

Warner Bros. first issued Game, Dames and Guitar Thangs in July 1977. It was the only album Eddie Hazel released in his lifetime; he died in 1992 at 42. Hazel had joined Parliament-Funkadelic's touring band in 1967 at seventeen and played the ten-minute guitar part on "Maggot Brain" in 1971. His P-Funk colleagues back him here, among them Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Garry Shider, Michael Hampton and Jerome Brailey, with Lynn Mabry and Dawn Silva on vocals.

Three of the seven tracks are covers: The Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'," the Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)," stretched here past nine minutes, and Bootsy's Rubber Band's "Physical Love." "What About It?" is an instrumental reworking of "Wars of Armageddon" from Funkadelic's Maggot Brain. Warner Bros. also released an edited "California Dreamin'" as a single (WBS 8425), backed with an instrumental version of the song.

The LP was cut out soon after release and became scarce enough that a 1994 episode of Homicide: Life on the Street turned on the destruction of someone's copy. Milligan has said its psychedelic, Maggot Brain-style approach was out of step with the funk of 1977. Rhino issued it as a numbered limited-edition CD in 2004, Collector's Choice Music followed with a CD, and Real Gone Music reissued it on vinyl in a gatefold in 2012.
