Sinner had never been pressed on vinyl until Craft Recordings issued this edition in 2021 for the album's 20th anniversary. It keeps the original eleven-song running order on a single black LP, catalog number CR00430, with the title track opening side A and "Sermon" closing side B. The record was plated at Record Technology Incorporated in California.
Wind-up Records first released Sinner on June 5, 2001. It was Drowning Pool's debut studio album and the only one the band made with original singer Dave Williams. Jay Baumgardner produced it at Ocean Studios in Burbank, California. The album entered the Billboard 200 at No. 14 and was certified platinum the year it came out.
"Bodies" came out as the first single in May 2001. "Tear Away" and "Sinner" followed as singles in 2002. Williams had the word tattooed on himself before the record had a name; when the band was working on the song, their A&R contact suggested it as the album title. He explained the sequencing in an MTV interview: "We wanted to start with 'Sinner' and end with 'Sermon'. We covered all the bases on religion and bad relationships."
