Black Vinyl LP

The black vinyl edition is the standard pressing of Useless Coordinates, the debut album by Drahla, issued on Brooklyn's Captured Tracks as CT296LP. It is a single LP with lacquers cut at Saff Mastering, and the jacket holds a newspaper-style poster insert and a download code for the digital album. Bone white, cardinal red and exotic grey runs were pressed as limited editions; this is the one with no color in the vinyl at all, which suits a sleeve that is mostly black to begin with.

Drahla formed in Leeds as a three-piece: Luciel Brown on vocals and guitar, Rob Riggs on bass and Mike Ainsley on drums, with Brown and Riggs trading instruments on the record as they do onstage. Captured Tracks says the album was recorded in Yorkshire in the second half of 2018, in about ten days of studio time fitted between a headline tour, support dates with Ought and METZ, and a Meltdown festival slot played at the invitation of The Cure's Robert Smith.

Saxophonist Chris Duffin of XAM Duo plays across much of the album, and the label's notes credit him with pointing the band toward the Japanese synth group Mariah and saxophonist Yasuaki Shimizu. All ten songs are written by Brown, Riggs and Ainsley. Twelve Divisions of the Day had come out as a single in the summer of 2018; Stimulus for Living was the first single announced with the album, and Pyramid Estate followed with its own video.

As with every earlier Drahla sleeve and video, Brown and Riggs designed the artwork themselves, a mixed-media piece drawing on Talking Heads and Gang of Four covers, the painter Cy Twombly and the Bauhaus. Captured Tracks describes the record as the band's critically acclaimed 2019 debut; their second album, angeltape, followed on the label in April 2024.
