Definitive Sound Series One-Step 180g 2LP, Numbered Slipcase Edition

This edition opened Interscope and Capitol's Definitive Sound Series, launched alongside A Perfect Circle's Mer de Noms and carrying series number DSS 1. It is an all-analog cut from the original master tapes. Chris Bellman mastered it at Bernie Grundman Mastering, Dorin Sauerbier ran the One-Step plating at Record Technology Incorporated (RTI), and RTI pressed it on 180g Neotech VR900-D2 vinyl. One-Step plating pulls the stamper straight from the lacquer, skipping the intermediate generations of standard three-step plating. Interscope lists it as a one-time pressing of 3,000 numbered copies.

The two records sit in a tip-on double gatefold jacket, a first for The Chronic according to Interscope's product notes, and the jacket slides into a slipcase with the copy number foil-stamped on its back. A Certificate of Authenticity comes in the set, and the discs ship in plastic-lined archival inner sleeves.

Interscope's notes also cover the layout. The original 1992 vinyl fit the whole album onto a single LP with long sides; since 2001 it has run across four sides, and this set keeps that split, numbering the tracks straight through from side A to side D. According to the same notes, the master tapes arrived fully sequenced, and every version of the album has been mastered at Bernie Grundman.

The Chronic was Dr. Dre's first solo album, released in December 1992 on Death Row and Interscope. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and its lead single, Nuthin' But a "G" Thang (the video above), peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100. The Library of Congress added the album to the National Recording Registry in 2019.
