180g Black Vinyl LP, All-Analog Reissue From Impex Records
Impex Records' edition of The Hurdy Gurdy Man is an all-analog (AAA) cut on a single 180-gram LP at 33 1/3 rpm. Chris Bellman mastered it at Bernie Grundman Mastering, and RTI handled the plating and pressing. Impex's notes say the cut was taken from Epic Records' analog master tapes. The catalog number is IMP 6055.
The jacket is a tip-on in Impex's own packaging, and inside sits a four-page booklet on heavy stock with rare photographs and new historical notes by Charles Granata.
Epic first issued The Hurdy Gurdy Man in the United States in October 1968, with Mickie Most producing. The title song had arrived as a single that May and reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 on the UK Singles Chart. Donovan wrote it in Rishikesh, India, while studying Transcendental Meditation alongside the Beatles, and its drone comes from a tambura George Harrison had given him. "Jennifer Juniper," also a 1968 single, opens side two.
