Vinyl LP Reissue

This is Legacy and Epic's vinyl reissue of Donovan's Greatest Hits, catalog number 88985432331, issued as part of Legacy's Classic Greatest Hits Series. It keeps the original 1969 Epic stereo program intact: eleven songs in their first running order, six on side one and five on side two, behind the Epic stereo front cover. The record ships in a printed inner sleeve with a picture insert advertising other Donovan albums, plus a download code. Lacquers for this pressing were cut at SST and the discs pressed by MPO, and "Mellow Yellow" is credited here as re-channelled for stereo.

Epic first issued the compilation in the United States in January 1969, with Pye following in the UK that March. It reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 in Canada, and the RIAA has certified it platinum. Three of its songs, "Epistle to Dippy," "There Is a Mountain" and "Lalena," were singles that had not yet appeared on any album, and "Sunshine Superman" runs in its unedited form, one minute and fifteen seconds longer than the 1966 single.

Epic could not secure the original recordings of "Catch the Wind" and "Colours," so Donovan cut new versions in May 1968 with producer Mickie Most, Big Jim Sullivan on guitar, John Paul Jones on bass and keyboards and Clem Cattini on drums. Those remakes are the versions heard on this LP. The 1999 Epic/Legacy CD went the other way, restoring the originals, reversing the two sides and adding four later hits. Robert Christgau placed the album in the "Basic Record Library" of his 1981 Record Guide.
