Black Vinyl 2LP Set In Gatefold Sleeve

Wewantsounds issues this concert on two black vinyl LPs in a gatefold sleeve, newly remastered, with new liner notes by Jason Weiss. It is the first official release of the recording, licensed by the Don Cherry Estate and by James Quinlan, who produced the concert. The front cover reproduces Moki Cherry's 1975 Mandala tapestry, a nod to the creative partnership between Don and Moki Cherry.

The set was recorded live on March 5, 1977, at Pease Auditorium in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and the label describes it as the only documented performance by Don Cherry, Collin Walcott and vocalist Leon Thomas together. The rest of Oregon, the group Walcott played in, joined them for part of the evening: Ralph Towner, Paul McCandless and Glen Moore. Cherry moves between trumpet, the doussn'gouni (a hunter's harp from Mali), bamboo flutes, percussion and voice. A month earlier he had played on Walcott's ECM album Grazing Dreams, and the label places this night as a forerunner of Codona, the trio Cherry and Walcott formed with Nana Vasconcelos, which released three albums on ECM, in 1979, 1981 and 1983.

Quinlan, who had worked as a sound engineer for Carla Bley and later booked Fela Kuti's 1980s US tour and directed the Creative Music Studio, tells Weiss in the notes: "Don brought Leon Thomas with him... as a guest, unannounced. It was not part of the advertisement or contract." Cherry (1936-1995) first came to prominence in Ornette Coleman's bands, on The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959) and Free Jazz (1961). In the 1970s he drew on African, Middle Eastern and Hindustani music, as heard on Brown Rice (1975), and the label ties this late-1970s period to what Cherry called his Organic Music philosophy.
