Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series 180g Stereo LP

This is the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series edition of Star Bright, an all-analog stereo pressing on 180g vinyl. Kevin Gray mastered it at Cohearent Audio from the original master tapes, and it was manufactured at Optimal in Germany. Blue Note describes the series as affordable all-analog reissues in standard packaging. Don Was and Cem Kurosman choose the titles and group them by theme, and Star Bright was issued on April 21, 2023 under the Hidden Gems heading, paired with Johnny Coles' Little Johnny C.

Dizzy Reece was born in Kingston, Jamaica, moved to London at 17 and worked across Europe, frequently in Paris, where he played with Don Byas and Kenny Clarke. Word of his playing reached Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, and his Blue Note debut, Blues In Trinity, came from a 1958 London session with Donald Byrd and Art Taylor. At Alfred Lion's urging he moved to New York, and on November 19, 1959 Lion recorded him at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with Rudy Van Gelder engineering.

The quintet pairs Reece with Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Taylor again on drums. Reece wrote four of the six pieces: "The Rake," "Groovesville," "The Rebound" and the Thelonious Monk-inspired "A Variation On Monk." The two standards are "I'll Close My Eyes" and Dorothy Parker and Ralph Rainger's "I Wished On The Moon." Blue Note also issued "The Rake" and "The Rebound" as the two sides of a 45, catalog 45-1759.

The original jacket was designed by Reid Miles with photography by Francis Wolff, and Leonard Feather wrote the liner notes. AllMusic awards the album four and a half stars.
