Yellow Vinyl LP With Digital Download Card

This is Partisan Records' vinyl edition of Deer Tick Vol. 2: a single LP pressed on yellow vinyl, catalog number PTKF 2151-1, with a digital download card packed in the jacket. Its ten songs run five to a side. The front cover reproduces a painting by Joe Ongie, a still life in an ornate gilt frame in which a ketchup bottle and a mustard jar carry the words "deer" and "tick," with a small brass plaque below naming the volume.

Vol. 2 is the loud half of a pair. The Providence band issued it on September 15, 2017, the same day as its quiet companion Vol. 1, and the two were their first new albums since Negativity in 2013. Partisan's notes put the folk-rooted acoustic songs on Vol. 1 and hand this record over to the garage-rock and punk side the band had long leaned toward. John McCauley described the split as a chance to separate "our two big interests: quiet and loud."

Both volumes were recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, after the band regrouped for its after-party shows at the Newport Folk Festival. The lineup is McCauley, guitarist Ian O'Neil, bassist Christopher Ryan and drummer Dennis Ryan. Adam Landry recorded, mixed and co-produced with the band; John Baldwin mastered it, and Dietrich Schoenemann cut the lacquers.

McCauley wrote most of the material, with O'Neil and Dennis Ryan contributing songs across the two records. O'Neil wrote and sings "Look How Clean I Am," a dry jab at sobriety worn as a celebrity marketing tool. "S.M.F." is McCauley's song for any band that has had a bad time at a summer music festival. "It's A Whale," released ahead of the album in June 2017, is the one he called probably the most political he would ever get in a song. On side two, "Pulse" is a piano instrumental McCauley wrote while thinking about the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting.
