White Shell Cassette Reissue

This is Relapse Records' cassette edition of Spiritual Healing, catalog number RR7194, issued in 2021. The label's own store lists it in a white shell, and its product photograph shows the shell printed in black with the band name, the album title and RR 7194, sitting in a clear case behind the Ed Repka cover art and a blue spine.

Spiritual Healing is Death's third studio album, first released by Combat Records in 1990. It was recorded at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida, with Scott Burns producing. It is the only Death album on which guitarist James Murphy and bassist Terry Butler both play, and the last with drummer Bill Andrews. Chuck Schuldiner's lyrics moved away from the gore of the first two records toward real-world subjects, among them drug addiction, faith healers and genetic reconstruction, while the playing grew more technical. Relapse Records' notes describe the record as a new turn in the band's catalog, with cleaner production and a higher level of musicianship.

A few details from the sessions: manager Eric Greif played the brief keyboard part on the title track, and Butler has recalled that Murphy misplaced his tremolo bar and played his title-track solo with a screwdriver. The cover was the last Ed Repka painting to front a Death album. The record reached number 63 on the Dutch chart and had gone out of print before Relapse reissued it in 2012.
