Double LP Reissue on Chrysalis, Catalog RMM-054-1

This is the 2023 Chrysalis reissue of De La Soul's fourth album, issued under exclusive license from A.O.I., LLC and spread across two LPs and four sides. The 1996 US vinyl on Tommy Boy was a single LP that left off "Intro" and "Down Syndrome"; this pressing carries the full eighteen-track sequence.

The runout on every side is etched RMM-054-1 with the initials J.POWELL, and both discs ship in black poly-lined inner sleeves. The sleeve credits place most of the sessions at the World Recording Facility with engineer Guido Osorio, while six songs, among them the title track and "Itzsoweezee (HOT)", were cut at Platinum Island with Tim Latham.

Stakes Is High first came out on July 2, 1996, and it was the first De La Soul album made without longtime producer Prince Paul. The group produced most of it themselves, with Jay Dee, later known as J Dilla, behind the title track. Its lyrics take aim at the state of hip-hop, the commercialization of the culture and gangsta rap. According to the group's official store, the album reached No. 4 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

The guest list helped launch careers: Mos Def reached a wider audience on "Big Brother Beat," and Common appears on "The Bizness." "Itzsoweezee (HOT)" is performed entirely by Trugoy the Dove, the Jazzyfatnastees add vocals to "Baby, Baby, Baby, Baby, Ooh Baby," and Zhane features on the third single, "4 More."

• Refund timing may vary depending on your payment provider

Chargebacks & Payment Disputes

We strongly encourage customers to contact us directly with any concerns before filing a credit card dispute or chargeback.
