Stakes Is High arrived in 1996 as De La Soul's fourth album, and the first the group made without Prince Paul, whose production had shaped the three records before it. The label's own notes describe the result as a tougher, more stripped-back sound, with a young J Dilla producing the title track in one of his earliest placements on a major release.

The title track reached No. 53 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and the album peaked at No. 4 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. "The Bizness" brought in Common, "Big Brother Beat" brought in Mos Def, and "4 More" featured Zhane.

This 30th anniversary edition, released through A.O.I. Records and distributed by Chrysalis, runs the original album across the first four sides, the full instrumental edits across the next two, and five bonus cuts on the seventh: the rare "Chanel No. Fever" and "I Can't Call It," De La Soul's own remix of "Itzsoweezee (HOT)," and two J Dilla remixes of the title track, one featuring Mos Def and Truth Enola. De La named the eight sides themselves, from "A-Side" through "Plug Won" and "Plug Too." The eighth, "Dave Side," carries no music at all: it holds the UV print of Dave. Four 140-gram LPs in a black and white spoke effect, housed in a book box.
