180-Gram Opaque Yellow Vinyl 2LP with Comic Insert

This edition of De La Soul's debut album is cut across two 180-gram LPs pressed on opaque yellow vinyl. The official De La Soul store lists custom printed inner sleeves and a comic insert packed with the jacket. It carries catalog number RMM-045-1 and was issued by AOI Records under exclusive license to Chrysalis on March 3, 2023, the same day the group's early catalog reached streaming services for the first time.

That return followed Reservoir Media's purchase of Tommy Boy, the album's original label, and a new round of sample clearances. One change from the 1989 sequence sits on side A: "Cool Breeze on the Rocks" appears here as "The Melted Version," an 18-second piece that replaces the original 48-second collage of "rock" samples with the sound of a record spun at high speed, ahead of the quiz-show skit.

3 Feet High and Rising was the first of three De La Soul albums made with producer Prince Paul, and its title comes from the Johnny Cash song "Five Feet High and Rising." It reached No. 1 on Billboard's R&B/Hip Hop chart and No. 24 on the Billboard 200, topped The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics' poll for 1989, and joined the Library of Congress National Recording Registry with its 2010 class. "Me Myself and I" became the group's only No. 1 on Billboard's R&B chart, and the album's recurring quiz-show skits are frequently credited with introducing the hip-hop skit. Toby Mott of the Grey Organisation designed the flower-strewn cover around the "D.A.I.S.Y. Age" motif that runs through the record.
