6LP Box Set On Black Vinyl, Three Double Gatefold Albums

Freedom Call is a six-LP box set from Edition Records: three double albums on black vinyl, each in its own gatefold sleeve, one for each of three Dave Holland ensembles. The box also carries liner notes by Holland and a fold-out musicians' key poster. The recordings were mixed by Scott Petito at NRS Recording Studios in Catskill, New York, and mastered by Steve Fallone at Sterling Sound in New York City, who also cut the vinyl lacquers.

Edition Records describes the set as the first box set of Holland's career, timed to his 80th birthday on October 1, 2026. Every recording on it is previously unreleased, drawn from live performances by his Sextet, his Quintet and the band Prism, and each group is presented as its own album: Sextet: Unity, Quintet: Synergism and Prism: Freedom.

The Sextet album features Antonio Hart on alto saxophone, Alex Sipiagin on trumpet and flugelhorn, Robin Eubanks on trombone, the late Mulgrew Miller on piano and Eric Harland on drums. The Quintet brings together Chris Potter on soprano and tenor saxophone, Robin Eubanks, Steve Nelson on vibraphone and marimba, and Nate Smith on drums. Prism is Holland with Kevin Eubanks on guitar, Craig Taborn on piano and electric piano, and Eric Harland. The first music issued from the collection was the Sextet's live "Lazy Snake."

Born in Wolverhampton, England, in 1946, Holland joined Miles Davis's band in 1968 and played on In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew. He recorded Conference of the Birds, his first album as a leader, for ECM in 1972. His big band won Grammy Awards for What Goes Around and Overtime, and in 2017 he was named an NEA Jazz Master. The Sextet's studio album Pass It On was released in 2008, and Prism's self-titled album in 2013.
