20th Anniversary Limited Edition White Vinyl 2LP

Virgin and UMe issued this two-LP set in May 2015 to mark twenty years of Brown Sugar, pressed as a limited edition on white vinyl. The label's listing notes it was the album's first time back on vinyl in almost ten years. The catalog number is B0022834-01, and the ten songs are spread across four sides.

Brown Sugar is D'Angelo's debut album, first released on July 3, 1995, through EMI. It was recorded in 1994 and 1995 at Battery Studios and RPM Studios in New York City and at the Pookie Lab in Sacramento, the personal studio of Raphael Saadiq. D'Angelo sang every vocal and handled most of the production, instrumentation, arrangement and songwriting himself, with production help from Saadiq, Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest and engineer Bob Power. The sessions paired vintage instruments such as the Fender Rhodes, the Hammond organ and Wurlitzers with drum machines and computers.

The album debuted at number 6 on Billboard's Top R&B Albums chart and later peaked at number 4. It spent sixty-five weeks on the Billboard 200, peaking at number 22, and the RIAA certified it Platinum on February 7, 1996. It earned D'Angelo four Grammy nominations. Its four singles were the title track, which D'Angelo wrote and produced with Ali Shaheed Muhammad; "Cruisin'," a cover of Smokey Robinson's 1979 hit; the Gold-certified "Lady"; and "Me and Those Dreamin' Eyes of Mine." The record is widely credited with launching neo soul, a term attributed to D'Angelo's manager, Kedar Massenburg.
