Rhino High Fidelity 180g Vinyl LP, Numbered Edition Of 5,000

This edition of Crosby, Stills & Nash belongs to Rhino High Fidelity, Rhino's limited series of premium vinyl reissues, and carries catalog number RHF1 8229. It is limited to 5,000 numbered copies. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio from the original stereo master tapes, with an all-analog chain, and Optimal pressed the record on 180-gram vinyl. The heavyweight glossy gatefold jacket comes with an obi strip and an exclusive insert of liner notes by Raymond Foye.

"To listen again to Crosby, Stills & Nash's self-titled first album is not so much to take a trip back in time but a voyage into timelessness," Foye writes in those notes. The trio produced the album themselves at Wally Heider's studio in Hollywood in February and March 1969, with Bill Halverson engineering, and Rhino's notes say the sessions ran under a strict no-visitors policy. Stephen Stills played all of the bass, organ and lead guitar parts. Dallas Taylor drums on five songs, and Jim Gordon on "Marrakesh Express."

Atlantic released the album on May 29, 1969. "Marrakesh Express" reached No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" No. 21, and the album peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and was certified four times platinum. In August 1969 the trio played these songs at Woodstock, and in 1970 they won the Grammy for Best New Artist. Henry Diltz shot the cover on a battered sofa outside an abandoned house at 815 Palm Avenue in West Hollywood before the group had settled on its name. The three sit in the order Nash, Stills, Crosby, and by the time they returned to reshoot it in name order, the house had been demolished.
