Black Vinyl LP, First Time on Vinyl

This 2023 Real Gone Music edition, catalog number RGM-1571, is the first time Lay It Down has been issued on vinyl. It is licensed from Universal Music Enterprises. Until then the 1996 album had only come out on CD, cassette and digital. Real Gone presses it as a single black LP, with seven songs on side A and six on side B, in a jacket with a printed inner sleeve that carries the lyrics.

Lay It Down is the Canadian band's sixth studio album and its first for Geffen Records, which signed the group after its RCA contract ended. It was also the first Cowboy Junkies record made up entirely of their own songs, with no covers, and the first to lean toward straight-ahead rock rather than country or blues. "A Common Disaster" and "Speaking Confidentially" both became hits on Canadian radio. Real Gone Music's notes credit producer John Keane with giving the record an Athens, Georgia sound that moves the band toward indie rock.

The songs were written and rehearsed in a single house on Rock Island in Lake Kashabog, a short drive from the band's home city of Toronto. They were recorded in June and July 1995 at Keane's studio in Athens, with Keane producing alongside Michael Timmins. For this album the band went back to its core four: Margo Timmins on vocals, Michael Timmins on guitar, Alan Anton on bass and Peter Timmins on drums. Michael played every guitar part. Strings appear on a Cowboy Junkies album for the first time, on four tracks, arranged by violinist Andy Carlson, who also led the quartet. Bob Ludwig mastered the record.

"Come Calling" appears twice, as His Song and Her Song. The two versions tell the story of an elderly couple dealing with Alzheimer's disease, and the song grew out of a couple the band knew at Lake Kashabog. The video for "Angel Mine" features Janeane Garofalo, and "Hold On to Me" was later used on the soundtrack of the 1998 film Homegrown.
