Remastered 140g Black Vinyl LP

This is 4AD's 2020 vinyl repress of Garlands, catalog 4AD0192LP, cut from audio remastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on 140-gram black vinyl. The label announced it as the record's first vinyl pressing in more than ten years, with the jacket kept faithful to the original 23 Envelope design.

The cover photograph is Nigel Grierson's, made as a college project drafting alternative covers for Siouxsie and the Banshees' The Scream; 23 Envelope, his partnership with designer Vaughan Oliver, handled sleeve design and art direction. On the 1982 issue, lyrics from "But I'm Not", "Shallow Then Halo", "Garlands" and "Grail Overfloweth" ran on the inner sleeve.

4AD reissued it on the same day as Victorialand. XS Noize noted at the announcement that the pair put every Cocteau Twins studio album back in print except The Moon and the Melodies, the band's 1986 collaboration with Harold Budd. MOJO named the two represses its Vinyl Package of the Month.

Garlands was the Scottish band's debut, released by 4AD in 1982, and the only full-length album Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie recorded with original bassist Will Heggie. It was made at Blackwing Studios with engineers Eric Radcliffe and John Fryer, Ivo Watts-Russell sharing production with the band. Guthrie told Penny Black Music in 2006 that the studio staff would not let them run the drum machine through fuzz pedals and guitar amps as they had on the demos, so the drums came out cleaner than the band wanted. The album charted on the UK Independent Albums chart with support from John Peel, for whom the band had recorded a session including "Wax and Wane" and "Garlands" in June 1982.
