For the 50th anniversary of Fish Out of Water, engineer Stephen W. Tayler made a new stereo mix of the album, and Esoteric Recordings has it cut at half speed at AIR Studios in London for this single LP. Esoteric's notes say the release fully restores the original LP artwork, and it comes with a printed inner bag and a poster.
Fish Out of Water was Chris Squire's first solo album, made in the spring and summer of 1975 when each member of Yes took time off to record one. The title plays on his nickname, "Fish." Sessions ran at New Pipers, his home studio in Surrey, and at Morgan Studios in London. His childhood friend Andrew Pryce Jackman, who had played with him in The Syn before Yes, arranged and orchestrated the music. Bill Bruford played drums, with Patrick Moraz on keyboards, Mel Collins on saxophone and Jimmy Hastings on flute.
The organ that opens "Hold Out Your Hand" was played by Barry Rose, organist at St Paul's Cathedral, who had known Squire and Jackman as boys. "Lucky Seven" takes its name from its 7/8 time signature. The album reached No. 25 in the UK and No. 69 in the US, and it remained Squire's only solo album of original material.
