Purple 180g Vinyl, Limited Numbered Edition of 2000

This is Music On Vinyl's 2026 reissue of In Color, catalog number MOVLP3552: a single 180-gram LP pressed on purple vinyl, limited to 2,000 individually numbered copies and packaged in a gatefold sleeve. Music On Vinyl ships from its warehouse in the Netherlands and specializes in 180-gram pressings of licensed catalog; it issued this edition in July 2026.

In Color was Cheap Trick's second studio album, released by Epic in 1977. Tom Werman produced it at Kendun Recorders in Los Angeles, giving it a more polished sound than the band's self-titled debut in the hope of a commercial breakthrough. It became the band's first album to reach the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 73, and did far better in Japan, where "I Want You to Want Me" and "Clock Strikes Ten" were hit singles.

Five of these ten songs, "Hello There" and "Big Eyes" among them, were later recorded live for Cheap Trick at Budokan, and that album's version of "I Want You to Want Me" became a US top 10 hit and the band's signature song. Rolling Stone placed In Color at No. 443 on its 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and Shake Some Action: The Ultimate Power Pop Guide ranks it No. 4.

The band were not happy with the production. Bassist Tom Petersson told Louder Sound in 2008 that the label tried to make them radio-friendly because the first record had not done well. Cheap Trick re-recorded the album with Steve Albini in 1997, and that version was never officially released.

The lineup is Robin Zander on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Rick Nielsen on lead guitar, Tom Petersson on bass and Bun E. Carlos on drums, with Jai Winding on keyboards and Jay Graydon adding guitar to "I Want You to Want Me." George Marino mastered the original release. Paula Scher and Jim Charne designed the sleeve around Benno Friedman's photographs: Zander and Petersson on motorcycles, in color, on the front, and Carlos and Nielsen on mopeds, in black and white and upside down, on the back.
