Clear Vinyl LP

This is the clear vinyl pressing of Ebalunga!!!'s reissue of Pathless Path, catalog number EBL-028LP, which the label presents as the album's first return to vinyl since 1979. Jessica Thompson mastered the reissue. The jacket reproduces Dorothy Darr's cover painting and photograph, and the album is licensed courtesy of the Ronald S. Altbach Estate.

Ebalunga!!!'s notes place the record in a quieter stretch of Charles Lloyd's career. By the end of the 1960s his quartet with Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette had reached well beyond the usual jazz audience, and the label points to Forest Flower as one of the first jazz recordings to sell a million copies. In 1970 Lloyd disbanded the quartet and withdrew to Big Sur, recording only occasionally. Pathless Path was recorded in 1978 and first issued in 1979. Lloyd produced it, and Jeff Peters and Terry Nelson engineered the sessions at Santa Barbara Sound Studios and Love Songs.

Lloyd plays tenor saxophone, flute, clarinet, piano and voice, with Mara Purl on koto, Mark Isham on synthesizer, Peter Maunu on acoustic guitar, Patrick O'Hearn on acoustic and electric bass, Kim Calkins on percussion and Ed Drayton on vocals. Isham, Maunu and O'Hearn later recorded together as Group 87. On the eleven-minute title piece Lloyd's piano and clarinet are paired with Purl's koto, and "The Call" is built from two overdubbed flutes. Lloyd composed the album except "Dancin' Water," written with O'Hearn and Maunu, and "Agni," written with Maunu and Isham. In 1983 the title track was featured in the first nationally syndicated broadcast of Music from the Hearts of Space.
