Indie Exclusive 180g Vinyl LP With Dolphy Series Postcard Set
An indie-retail pressing of Rhythm X issued for Record Store Day Black Friday 2026; this edition adds a limited Strata-East Dolphy Series postcard set. The audio is cut directly from the original analog tapes, mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI. It is housed in a deluxe tip-on gatefold jacket with new liner notes and photographs not previously published. The release belongs to the reissue program Mack Avenue Music Group runs with Strata-East, the artist-owned label founded by Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell.
Rhythm X was saxophonist Charles Brackeen's debut as a leader. It was recorded in New York in 1968, produced by Clifford Jordan, and released by Strata-East in 1973 as SES-19736, the fourth title in the label's Dolphy Series. Brackeen played with three members of Ornette Coleman's band: Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass and Ed Blackwell on drums. All four pieces are Brackeen compositions, and Mack Avenue's notes point out that he did not lead another album for 19 years.
