Black Vinyl 2LP Gatefold With Booklet

This is the black vinyl edition of Light in the Attic's 2026 reissue, catalog number LITA 226, licensed from Saregama India. The ten pieces are spread across two LPs in a gatefold jacket, three to a side on the first record and two to a side on the second. A printed booklet comes with the set, its essay titled "The Electronic Visions of Charanjit Singh: Inside of Tradition, Outside of Time." The runouts are etched, and the records were manufactured in Germany for this US release.

The album first appeared in 1982 on His Master's Voice in India as ECSD 2912. Singh recorded it live at HMV's studios in Bombay with just three Roland machines, the Jupiter-8 synthesizer, the TR-808 drum machine and the TB-303 bass synthesizer, programming the 303 to follow Hindustani classical scales. He had bought the TB-303 in Singapore soon after its introduction in late 1981, and the opening "Raga: Bhairavi" sends the words "Om Namah Shivaya" through a vocoder.

The record found its way onto Indian national radio but sold poorly and was largely forgotten until a 2010 re-release. Because of the way it uses the 808 and the 303, some music journalists have called it perhaps the earliest acid house record, five years ahead of Phuture's "Acid Tracks" (1987). From 2012 until his death in 2015, Singh performed the album live for the first time, making his UK debut at 72 in November 2012 and later playing Berghain in Berlin alongside A Guy Called Gerald. His live collaborator in those years was Johanz Westerman, known as Thee J Johanz.
