Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf Series 180g Black Vinyl LP in a Tip-On Jacket

This is the Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf reissue of Perception, issued by Craft Recordings as CR00848 with the blue Muse Records label design restored. Kevin Gray cut it from the original master tapes in an all-analog (AAA) chain, and the 180-gram black vinyl was pressed at RTI. The jacket is a tip-on construction, and its back cover carries the 1973 liner notes by Gary Giddins alongside the full session credits. Jazz Dispensary says the album had not been on vinyl in more than fifty years.

Catalyst were a Philadelphia band found by producer Skip Drinkwater, who signed them to Muse after hearing them play a club in West Philadelphia. Perception, their second album, was recorded between November 21 and 27, 1972, and released in 1973, produced by Drinkwater and Dennis Wilen. Bassist Alphonso Johnson had left for Weather Report by then, so Tyrone Brown played Fender bass alongside Eddie Green on electric piano, Odean Pope on tenor saxophone and flute, and Sherman Ferguson on drums.

The sessions widened the lineup with Norman Harris on guitar, Billy Hart and Farel Johnson on percussion and conga, and an ARP synthesizer part the sleeve credits to Pat Gleason. Anthony Jackson on bass and Larry Washington on conga join for the closing cover of "Got To Be There." The disc labels credit the fifteen-minute title track to Green and "Uzuri" to Brown. In its reissue announcement, Jazz Dispensary quotes AllMusic calling the record "brilliant avant-garde work."

"Ile Ife" was later recorded by Uri Caine, Questlove and Christian McBride on The Philadelphia Experiment. Catalyst released four albums between 1972 and 1975 and disbanded in 1976.
