Pink Vinyl 20th Anniversary Edition with the Original Pink Foil Cover

Matador marked twenty years of The Greatest by pressing it on pink vinyl and putting the original pink foil jacket back into print for a limited run. This edition was released on July 10, 2026, as a single LP under catalog number OLE2238LP. Side two runs to seven tracks and ends with "Up and Gone," a song that first appeared only on limited editions of the album in 2006.

The reissue came out alongside a tour where Cat Power played the album start to finish across North America, the UK and Europe. Matador announced it together with a Redux EP on Domino, which includes a new recording of "Could We."

Chan Marshall made the record in May 2005 at Ardent Studios in Memphis, with Stuart Sikes producing. Matador's notes say she was after the 1970s Hi Records sound, and she recorded with players from that world. Mabon "Teenie" Hodges, Al Green's guitarist and co-writer on "Love and Happiness" and "Take Me to the River," plays guitar on every track except "Hate." His brother Leroy "Flick" Hodges and Dave Smith share the bass parts. Steve Potts, whom the surviving members of Booker T. & the MG's brought in to replace Al Jackson, plays drums. Harlan T. Bobo and Jonathan Kirkscey wrote the string arrangements.

The Greatest is Cat Power's seventh studio album and the first she made without any covers: Marshall wrote every song. When it came out in January 2006 it entered the Billboard 200 at No. 34, her highest chart position up to then, on first-week sales of about 23,000 copies. Later that year it won the Shortlist Music Prize, and Marshall became the first woman to receive it. Rolling Stone ranked it sixth among the albums of 2006.
